Dear Parents/Guardians,
June has arrived and PETNS are having our biggest Pride celebration EVER this year to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and it's allies. 🏳🌈 As part of this celebration, we are holding a poster competition! This competition is open to all children in the school and the poster can be any size, using any material and based on one of the following titles: 1. Celebrate your differences! 2. LGBTQ+ by birth, fabulous by choice! 3. Different families, same love. The deadline for entries is Friday June 17th and must have your child's name and class written on the back. There will be a number of winners who will receive some special prizes! 😍 Stay tuned for lots more exciting and colourful Pride events to come! 🏳🌈

This week was a very exciting week at school when RTÉ came to visit our school garden! They came as a result of the projects we completed last year as part of the National Pollinator Plan.
Through ChangeX, a non-profit organisation that facilitates community funding from the private sector, we were able to complete great work in our school garden to support pollinators. When Microsoft saw what their funding had achieved, they approached RTÉ with a view to telling our story and so they did! John Kilraine from RTÉ arrived on Wednesday morning and filmed us in the classroom, in the geodome and on the hill. The children all loved the excitement of being on camera and waiting to see how the final product would turn out. When the feature aired online on Wednesday night and on the RTÉ Six One news last night, everyone loved seeing our school garden and we've had amazing comments from our school community and from people around the country about it! We are all very proud of Chris, Aliza and Evan for how well they spoke and of all the children in Discover Nature Club and the School Garden Committee for how well they represented our school. Check out the pictures below for some behind the scenes shots of the visit! We are looking forward to hopefully securing this funding for a second year and we are excited to share with you our plans for it in our garden. 3/24/2022 0 Comments Thaifeamar an ceolchoirm Seachtain na Gaeilge! As part of our learning, we are exploring facts and interesting information through an artistic way. We have been very busy creating lots of artworks that show of our design skills as well as our knowledge of space!
The Maple Class were learning about the American abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock and after looking and responding to his work, we took inspiration and created our own splatter galaxies inspired by his work! The Elm Class were learning about the moon landings and used toilet roll holders and lots of decorations to construct their own rocket ships to blast off into space! We were very impressed with the creativity and imagination going on. Both the Maple and Elm class conducted a chromotography experiment which left us with beautiful new planets! We used markers and water to seperate ink into its component colours and had great fun predicting and exploring the process. Take a look at the pictures below to see all of our space themed creativity! 2/15/2022 0 Comments Maple Class Clay CottagesThe Maple Class were busy creating clay cottages recently as part of our learning about houses and homes! We took chunks of clay and formed them into blocks. We then took smaller pieces that we used to shape our roofs. We used some mark making tools to create the doors, windows and textured roofs of our cottages. We also had great fun painting them and transforming them into realistic Irish country homes. Take a look at the pictures below to see the process of creating our clay cottages and building our new town: MAPLE VALLEY!
2/15/2022 0 Comments Elm Class Garden Work! The Elm Class did so much great work in the garden already this spring! We added new materials into our compost bin and gave it a good mix to ensure that all the materials in there are going to decompose properly. We also prepared one of the raised beds in the Geodome and planted some seeds for salad leaves! We're already excited to have delicious leaves to eat in the coming months! Check out the pictures below to see us hard at work in the garden!
11/12/2021 0 Comments Science Week 2021This week was a very exciting week in First Class as we explored lots of different concepts and ideas for Science Week!
We loved making predictions and seeing if they were right or wrong. The children also loved using a variety of materials to conduct our amazing experiments. We really loved seeing the work you all did at home as well in your pictures on Google Classroom! Keep them coming! 11/5/2021 0 Comments Maple Class BenchballFor the past few weeks, the Maple Class have been focusing on honing some of our gross motor skills such as catching, throwing and running. Our practice has culminated in learning to play benchball which includes all of these skills!
The children loved developing their teamwork skills through this game and we had lots of healthy competition and fun. Check out these pictures of our benchball fun and maybe your child can teach you the rules! This week for Outdoor Classroom Day, Mark Wilkinson of Tyrrelstown House was kind enough to allow us a visit to his beautiful grounds. We explored the beautiful surroundings of Tyrrelstown House and learned all about different leaves from different trees, names of trees, spotted huge mushrooms and even saw a mouse!
The kids had a wonderful time connecting with our natural environment. They were a huge help in filling big bags of leaves for us to turn into compost next year. All in all, a wonderful day out! Check out the pictures below for a taste of the fun. 10/22/2021 0 Comments Elm Class Hedgehog HutsThe Elm Class had great fun this week creating shelters for Hattie the Hedgehog from our story 'Don't Hog The Hedge.' We used natural materials that we found in our surroundings to design and build these fabulous creations!
Have a look below and see which one is your favourite! |
